I'm making photography videos on Youtube again!
Captain's log
It's been a little more than a month since my last newsletter. My plan then was to steer away from being a photography youtuber, and to become more of a philosophy/self help-youtuber on my new channel.
Well, I discovered, through making a few videos on my new philosophy/self help-channel, that it didn't quite feel exciting enough for me. Sitting in a room, researching topics and then making videos about them quickly became boring and unfulfilling. I started to miss the excitement of going out on photo walks.
Just as I had this realization, I caught a really bad cold. I was in bed, sick, for several days. All I could do was to rest and watch youtube.
I stumbled across some videos by Faizal Westcott, a well known and talented street photographer on Youtube. I became intrigued and inspired. I had watched his and other street photographer's videos on Youtube for years, but never before considered street photography to be a possibility for me.
Later that day I also came across the beautiful, sublime street photography of Fredrik Axling, who actually photographs my city! And something clicked in me – "I gotta try this!"
Why hadn't I considered street photography earlier? Maybe because I was so focused on macro photography, and because that had become my identity. Maybe because I have felt that being in the city stresses me out. Maybe because I am afraid of being confronted photographing people out in public. Or maybe because I had no great role models and inspirations in street photography, the way Thomas Shahan was an inspiration in macro photography for me. I think it was probably a combination of all these factors.
So in the last few weeks, I have been doing street photography. I still very much consider myself a beginner, and it certainly has pushed me far outside my comfort zone, but I love it so far.
A great thing with street photography is also that you can do it all year round, there isn't a "high season" in the summer – I can utilize the variability of the Swedish seasons to get variability in my photography.
I published a few youtube videos about my street photography journey so far, and I got so many positive, encouraging comments on these videos – that is a big reason why I decided to keep going after the first video. I am so happy to get your support, even though most people followed me to learn macro photography.

The future
Will I still be doing street photography when sending out the next newsletter? Who knows!
My strategy for life in the last 10 years or so has been to do what I feel excited about doing, and to always follow my gut feeling to find that.
Priority number one: have fun and enjoy my day. Priority number two: figure out a way to make a living doing that.
It has been a great strategy, because it has kept me really happy most of the time.
I really hope that I will continue enjoying street photography, because that might make my autumn and winter interesting and fun – and who knows, maybe I feel ready to do macro photography again when spring arrives next year?
Goodbye for now
