good afternoon, i hope you’re well. it’s hot here in florida zone 10a (95 degrees F and humid), so i’m sitting inside, reading and researching. i want to create a summer media curriculum - i’ve seen a few others do this and i felt inspired. see more below… and as always, read what you want, and leave the rest.
questions, comments, concerns? feel free to reply to this e-mail~ or email me at miamakesit@disroot.org
i walked away from patreon for half a year, but with some encouragement from some friends, it is back open. tiers are available for $3 (behind the scenes), $6 (digital downloads), $8 (monthly sticker), and $15 (sponsorship) a month. if you’d like to support my work and have a little extra cash, click here.
i’m honored to finally be apart of this zine that i love! submissions are now open for issue 5, i highly suggest that you consider submitting.
this issue is a call to action! if you’re feeling overwhelmed or alone in the struggle, i understand. the piece i wrote for this issue offers some guidance. click here to order a copy for $6, or reply to this email if you’d like to subscribe for a fee of $6 every February, May, August, and November. i’ll send you a recurring invoice from Square that you can also add a card to if you’d like automatic billing.
please go to antizine.superhi.com to find submission guidelines, how you can get paid $$$ for submitting, a printer-friendly archive of year 1 issues, and sponsorship/advertisement info.
my mom donated some blank t-shirts to me recently, so i need to treat those and print them. i also want to print more packs of my lino-cut cards… i think i am going to create a few rainbow packs! crossing my fingers.
so my webstore is open again, but it’s different than it was. it basically works like an inventory list for what i have available, along with price info. if you see something you would like to purchase, you must email me with your selections and then i will present you with a few different payment options. since this is more of a manual process, there may be some items listed that i no longer have available, but i am going to do my best to update the site whenever i get an order. OH, and also, if you want to donate a gently used, light-colored blank shirt to me, i will give you a $4 credit (for each shirt). 100% cotton preferred.
it works! it’s simple, but it works. i want to add more content this evening. feel free to click around and let me know if you see any typos or questions.
♪♬♫ i just installed a brand new irrigation system for my one garden bed. the plants seem to be doing well! i was away for almost two weeks and came back to some wild growth! the okra and seminole pumpkins seem to be loving the heat, and i still have some strawberries and jalapenos coming.
my bush beans don’t seem too happy, but i’m going to continue nurturing them. i also found some volunteer bean plants sprouting, so maybe those will do better than the ones i intentionally planted… we shall see.
pigeon peas are still coming and my native tea bush and fire bush are blooming. the pollinators love the african basil, it’s gotten huge over the last 2 months cause of the heat. the okra is budding, so i’m looking forward to it’s beautiful flowers.
♪♬♫ i want to do more but it is so hot! i am inspired by the land, i’m inspired by the resiliency of these florida plants. i wish i could stand to be out there longer. i need a nice wide brim hat, and that would definitely help.
♪♬♫ i was reading about seed libraries - how to organize and start them. i want to do this one day! in florida, it would definitely need to be indoors. that’s a bummer, cause more people would be willing to peruse if it were outside. in the future, i would like to work with a library or other community center to get one started.
♪♬♫ foraging this month: some new plants are sprouting. there’s bitter melon creeping onto the fence, some shampoo ginger popping out of the corner of the yard, and some poor-man’s pepper. i’ll be using these in the coming months!
ANTi zine is now accepting submissions for our next issue: all about FOOD (food systems, food sovereignty, edible foraging, etc.). the zine will be published in mid-august 2025. the deadline to submit is friday, july 18.
“SUBSTRATE is a quarterly zine that asks artists and writers to consider what a better world might look like. For another world to be possible, we must first--and continually--learn to imagine and deeply believe in it. We seek to practice revolutionary optimism and imagination as one antidote to nihilism, apathy, and despair. We want to exercise the creative muscles involved in remaking futures for us to live in and we want to do it together.”
“What does it mean to create art that accepts the reality of loss? After last year’s unprecedented back-to-back storms—Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton—HCC Art Galleries invites Florida-based artists and/or activists to contribute to In Case of Flood, a group show that embraces uncertainty, risk, community and creative adaptation…Creatives of all disciplines are eligible but must be a resident in the state of Florida… Applicants must also be willing to accept the possibility—and reality—that their work may be damaged or lost.”
✮⋆˙ if you didn’t know, i was arrested at a disclose and divest protest at a university last year. i was subsequently fired and haven’t been able to find a regular job since. i have a trial date in july. if you’d like to attend in solidarity, i am only disclosing details to trusted friends and organizers. feel free to e-mail me, along with any memories we have together (especially if your e-mail isn’t your name or in an instance where i may not know your full name - for example, if we’ve met at a market or workshop) so i know that you are someone i actually know, or proves that you are affiliated with a specific organization. pictures can help too. thanks for understanding. of course, if you have my phone number, feel free to ask via text.
✮⋆˙ because of that looming deadline, i’m immersing myself in writing, reading, and farming this month. i have one more pet sitting gig from june 25 - july 5, then it’s my siblings birthday, and then i may do a trip up to northern GA. then it will only be a few short weeks away… i’m scared but i’m ready.
this media list will act as my summer 2025 curriculum. if i ingest any media, i intend to draw from this list:
✮⋆˙ How to be Anti-Racist by Ibram X. Kendi
✮⋆˙ Tending the Wild: Native American Knowledge and the Management of California’s Natural Resources by M. Kat Anderson
✮⋆˙ How to Protest Without Upsetting Anyone by Lolo
✮⋆˙ Black Farmers in America, 1865-2000 The Pursuit of Independent Farming and the Role of Cooperatives
✮⋆˙ Linda McMahon | The Last Secretary of Education by Fundie Fridays
✮⋆˙ Blue Origin's All-Female Launch WASN'T Empowering by Kat Blaque
✮⋆˙ The REAL Faces of Black Conservatism by F.D. Signifier
✮⋆˙ The Secret World of Arrietty from Studio Ghibli
✮⋆˙ The Rehearsal season 2 - an assignment from some friends
✮⋆˙ my biennial re-watch of Avatar: The Last Airbender. we got a blue-ray set for $10 at sound exchange in tampa last year!!
✮⋆˙ i have dried green onions, along with some dried oregano (fresh herbs were from Open Hands Farm in Longwood FL). i dried these before i left on my trip earlier this month. i think i am going to create an herb salt with them! just pulse the dried herbs together until fine, then mix with salt/pepper for a DIY herb salt.
✮⋆˙ i chopped up onion, garlic chives, and poblanos and mixed them. i placed teaspoons of the mix into a silicone ice mold. i added oil and freezed. i popped them out of the molds and into a zip-lock bag for future use. i love doing this when i have fresh product that needs to be used before it goes bad.
✮⋆˙ i’m going to whip up this vegan vanilla cake and frosting recipe, but instead of strawberries, i am going to add mango jam from Aubrey (second breakfast) in between the layers of the cake. i can’t wait to taste it.
