mia makes it | the working class farmer | ANTi zine
i’m out of town but i am not someplace new. many of my friends are here. so, i am making the most of my time by seeing them and going to parks and springs in ‘florida’ in between taking care of a pair of kitty-cats. (=^・ω・^=) i am grateful for this time, and also making time to read and work on dormant projects, which i will elaborate on later…

it’s a process… and sometimes i wonder if it’s worth it. i think it is… miamakesit.art
now they just need to be printed.
this is so embarrassing (つω`。) another unexpected cost that came up this month has to do with my webstore. i worked so long to build it, but i didn't realize i had to pay $20 a month to host it on my site. to be frank, it's not worth it, for me. sucks to put 30+ hours into it, only to have to just migrate to someplace else anyway. i just don't know how i am going to deal with whatever fees. that was the entire reason i wanted to host it myself. but i don't sell enough online right now, to make it lucrative enough. it's a bummer but hopefully something better will work out for me!
i do miss the convenience of sharing photos quickly, so i am brainstorming ways of creating a ‘feed’ of sorts that i can direct people to, especially since that format is so familiar. and, that way, if someone asks me for my instagram, i can direct them away from instagram but still give them what they would ~want~ - a quick way to see what i’ve been up to, ~in photos~ (we are visual creatures, i get it). thinking this will be in the “bedroom” of my website.

♪♬♫ BED FLIPPING FOR THE HOT HOT HEAT OF SUMMER
in florida, it’s consistently 90 degrees now. the wet isn’t here yet, but it will be. the bugs are coming out. hurricane season approaches. it’s time to add in some flowers to enrich the soil for fall planting in a few months. however, there are some edible plants that i am attempting to sow ‘n’ grow:
OKRA, okra loves the heat and the blooms bring in beneficial bugs. and, the roots help the soil so these sturdy veggies are great companion plants!
LUFFA, a type of gourd that thrives in the HEAT. i’m giving it a try!
BASIL loves the heat!
YARDLONG BEAN/CHINESE LONG BEAN, i can’t find them right now, but if you got ‘em, sow ‘em!
SEMINOLE PUMPKINS, i started these about 3 weeks ago now, so hopefully they will grow. when i get back home, i plan to build a support system for them, using the sunflower stalks from the spring blooms that died off.
PEANUTS, i haven’t planted them yet, so i am hoping it is not too late to try!
WATERMELON, especially if i don’t try peanuts, i will try the watermelon variety “florida giant watermelon”
SWEET POTATO, i won’t know if they’re growing until i start digging, but i must be patient and allow for the vine to begin to die. then, i’ll know it’s harvest time.
♪♬♫ HARVESTING
i am harvesting dried pigeon peas to use for seed and for cooking later on in the year. eggplants are here, and so are the last bit of strawberries. i grabbed some dill flowers and one of the last sunflowers to make a bouquet. and, i harvested the last of my kale!
♪♬♫ SEED SAVING
i am reading about the proper methods of seed saving but also just experimenting and trying things before reading about it. when i go for walks in county parks, i have been learning about native plant species and taking dried pods and flower buds when i see them. today, i grabbed some lazy susan flowers that were dried on the stem, along with some dried sunshine mimosa.
i also found a dried up thistle bud, so i want to try sprouting some of these in my backyard when i get home. i should look up to see if these are annuals or perennial. i am trying to think of the best ways of planting these seeds. i am wondering if i should just sprinkle the seeds on the ground and let whatever germinates go? hmmmmm idk. here’s some study material for u:
i’ve also made some stamps for my diy seed packaging:
♪♬♫ WORKSHOPS
i attended a seed propagation workshop at for the people food plot in tampa on saturday, 5/17. it was very informative, and they gave the participants a bag of soil, various seeds, and a seeding tray. i am currently attempting to germinate seeds in them, now. okra, luffa, and hot pepper is what i am attempting, i hope they work out!

✮⋆˙ why is everything money??
so one piece of good news is that this newsletter surpassed 100 subscribers! the bad news is, i now have to pay $90 a year for the buttondown service. it's good to grow but the extra expenses are a pain to say the least... especially this month, the month i had to pay my car insurance. sigh.
✮⋆˙ finishing up an embroidery project that should’ve been finished long ago…
i will be updating you once the piece is officially donated to Hillsborough Community College Art Gallery’s permanent collection… ✺◟( • ω • )◞✺ this means, you will be able to make an appointment to see the work, but they may also include it in future shows and installations that are curated using their ever-growing permanent collection.
