When I was a kid in Detroit, the remarkable takeover of the state’s politics by the Democratic Party led by Soapy Williams who became Governor in 1948, Walter Reuther, the head of the United Auto Workers, and Blair Moody, a journalist, made a big impression on me. Despite having left Michigan in 1960 to make my way in the world, I have always kept my eye on its politics. Thus, when I came across this latest podcast by David Frum, which, amazingly, covers the economic imbecility of Trump’s tariffs, the significance of Michigan’s primary election this coming Tuesday to the 2028 Presidential election, Obama’s legacy, and climate change in the context of Nolan’s Odyssey, the tug was irresistible.
