Why a newsletter?

When I started my PhD studies three years ago, I was only getting one email newsletter that I actively enjoyed - Laura Has a History, from a friend I've known for twenty years. I thought Laura was a bit archaic, because I did all my communication over social media, and I thought that was normal.

A year ago, I learned from a work colleague that email is resurging in popularity as a way to get information. A marketing survey I conducted for my museum bore that out - a huge proportion of respondents wanted to get our updates by email. I realized I was also reading other newsletters by now, too - Museum Human, Conbini Boys, and more. So, it seems, email is back.

Now seems like an opportune time to start my own email newsletter. I've seen plenty of discussion out there about which software to use, and I'm in a new phase of my PhD research: fieldwork is underway. This newsletter will allow me to:

  • journal about my experience in ways social media doesn't (RIP LiveJournal)
  • include pictures and links inline with the storytelling
  • show up in your inbox instead of being subject to an algorithm

I'm not going to charge anything for this. I don't expect I'll actually get enough subscribers that I'll need to upgrade tiers, so if I'm not paying anything, neither should you. And even then, probably not, because [insert plentitude of reasons here].

So, are you ready?

A white man rubs his hands gleefully and signs Ready!

Let's go!
