last free class of the year

A John Tenniel illustration from one of Lewis Carroll's Alice books showing Alice holding a bottle with a label that says "DRINK ME." This reminds me of all the scare stories I've been hearing since I was a kid about how on Halloween evil drug dealers will lace candy with drugs and give them to your kids, and every year a bunch of people get on social media and point out that drugs are expensive and there is absolutely no reason to give them to children who don't want them instead of either selling them or taking them yourself, but to no avail. Every year the panic machine starts up again.
Maybe comparing improv classes to what happens to Alice isn’t the best marketing strategy? Much to consider here.

Hey spuds,

The headline this week is that the last free class of the year (and maybe ever? see below) is happening on Wednesday Sept. 3rd. This is as risk-free an introduction to this stuff as you’re gonna get, so if you or someone you know is looking for an easy way in, this is it. Please spread the word!

And if you don’t need any convincing, the next session of Improv for Introverts opens a week later. At the risk of blowing smoke up my own ass, people really like this class! You might too!

So: the free classes.

I really want to keep doing them. The theory is that if I can just get people in the door, they’ll see that improv isn’t as scary as they thought and they’ll be more likely to sign up for a regular class. This has generally proven to be true.

However, it’s also true that a fairly high percentage of people sign up for the free class and then just ghost, even though I practically beg people to let me know if they can’t make it.

I don’t take this personally. (Or, more accurately: I understand that I shouldn’t take it personally.) But it does make me wonder if this is an effective marketing tool.

So if you’ve read this far, I’d be interested to know your thoughts on the free classes. Did you take one? Are you planning to take one? Does the existence of a free introductory class make you more or less likely to sign up for a regular class?

If you get a chance, let me know what you think, and I’ll report on the responses next week.

Till then,
John
