Memory Rising: August 2024

In this month’s edition:

- Going to Society of American Archivists? Save the date!   - *A Green New Deal for Archives* wins Waldo Gifford Leland award - Environmental impact and digital preservation - Upcoming grant deadlines - This month’s recommendations Did you watch the Olympics Opening Ceremony? I hadn’t planned to but then I spontaneously decided to watch it live—the perks of setting your own schedule! I *loved* the opening ceremony! I talk about rivers, infrastructure, and watersheds a lot in my work and seeing the Seine as the stage for the parade of nations was brilliant, and Parisian icons as the backdrop for the rest of the performances? Amazing. I was totally moved by the dance performance honoring the workers repairing Notre Dame (maintenance!) and the part where the centenarian French Olympian passed the torch to the two young athletes to light the hot air balloon cauldron. And I loved the  steampunk ghost horse galloping down the Seine. So, so, so good. What a beautiful assemblage of sports and arts and culture.




Speaking of rivers, the image above is of a former lock station on the Ohio River that is now a research lab for Ohio River ecology at [Thomas More University](https://www.thomasmore.edu/academics/explore-campus/biology-field-station/field-station-research-projects/). I recently visited and got to meet some [hellbenders](https://nationalzoo.si.edu/animals/hellbender)! Rivers are such a life force and it was a lot of fun to see this beautifully repurposed building that now serves as a laboratory and educational space. Shout out to the lab staff who directed a fun and educational tour.

By now you should have received a calendar invitation to the time/location of the event) # *A Green New Deal for Archives* wins Waldo Gifford Leland award 💚 My 2023 publication  [A Green New Deal for Archives](https://www.clir.org/pubs/reports/a-green-new-deal-for-archives/) recently won the Society of American Archivists’ [2024 Waldo Gifford Leland award](https://www2.archivists.org/recipients/2024/waldo-gifford-leland-award-eira-tansey)! The award is given for “writing of superior excellence and usefulness in the fields of archival history, theory, and practice.”




SAA acknowledges the work as “a timely, compelling, and intellectually rigorous work that applies to archives and archival workers of all kinds, envisioning a path forward during tumultuous times.”




Nominators called it “an exceptional contribution to the professional literature that interweaves recent urgent professional discourse about equity, justice, labor, funding, and climate change,” a “generous gift to our field,” and “one of our most important pieces of professional literature.”




I’m filled with gratitude and validation to see this work, which means so much to me, reflected as impactful and meaningful across the profession. Thank you to SAA and to the nominators for this high honor. # Environmental impact and digital preservation I recently authored “[Environmental Impact and Digital Preservation](https://www.dpconline.org/docs/dpc-technology-watch-publications/technology-watch-guidance-notes/3130-environmental-impact-and-digital-preservation/file),” part of the  Digital Preservation Coalition [Technology Watch](https://www.dpconline.org/digipres/discover-good-practice/tech-watch-reports) Guidance Note series. It’s now available to the public!




The new Guidance Note gives readers a brief but wide-ranging introduction to how digital preservation activities can both affect, and be affected by, environmental change. The report examines the implicit assumptions of digital preservation, and identifies how changes in the environment might require us to rethink the risks we face and our plans to mitigate such threats. # Upcoming grant deadlines Thinking about applying for a climate-change related grant? ### National Endowment for the Humanities: - [Climate Smart Humanities Organizations](https://www.neh.gov/program/climate-smart-humanities-organizations-0) grants fund climate change mitigation and adaptation assessments and the development of climate adaptation plans. Due September 12.




### National Historical Publications and Records Commission: The optional draft deadline for all of these funding opportunities is August 15. - [Capacity Building for Historically Black Colleges and Universities Archives](https://www.archives.gov/nhprc/announcement/hbcu-archives) funds the development of climate action plans and the creation and implementation of a traveling archivist program. - The [Archival Projects](https://www.archives.gov/nhprc/announcement/archival.html) fund supports inventorying and assessing archival records and collection processing plans. - [Publishing Historical Records in Collaborative Digital Editions](https://www.archives.gov/nhprc/announcement/editions.html) funds research and publishing in social justice movement history.




### Institute for Museum and Library Services:
- [National Leadership Grants for Libraries](https://www.imls.gov/grants/available/national-leadership-grants-libraries) fund projects that support the development of emergency and disaster management plans. Such work will be critical as organizations adapt to climate change. Due September 20. - [The Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program](https://imls.gov/grants/available/laura-bush-21st-century-librarian-program) funds projects that develop professional development and training programs to enable the library and archival workforce to meet the needs of their communities. Due September 20. # This month’s recommendations 🗑️ [Is It Eligible for Destruction?](https://www.in.gov/iara/services-for-government/workshops-and-training/eligiblefordestruction/) (game) - Records managers, records creators, and archivists will love this fun and engaging game developed by the Indiana Archives and Records Administration (IARA) called “Is It Eligible for Destruction?” Try not to commit a felony—but on the other hand, it’s a safe space to do so!
