Ha'azinu
Hello! It is 8 Tishrei 5781, and this week’s parsha is ha’azinu (aka: listen up y’all). Moses gets pretty longwinded and it’s written in two columns. We are so close to the end of the torah!
This is so embarrassing to write, because I know it’s deeply uncool, but I think I had a spiritual experience brought on by the Rosh Hashana musaf service both days. So, of course, I turned it into a shitpost thread.
Zoe Belinsky wrote on Borges and Judaism about Borges’ library of babel, on limitless information but only if you already know what you’re looking for already, talking about information and truth and the universe. ‘s good, if you like that kind of thing, and i do.
Brivele put out a video pairing lines from Howard Zinn’s essay Don’t Despair About The Supreme Court with an old Yiddish tune. It’s very good.
Bad jewish people doing bad things: the kosher meat processing company formerly known as agriprocessors (note how the wikipedia page has s e v e n subsections under controversies, and none of them are ~fun controversies), now called agristar under new ownership who in that interview sounds pretty cartoonishly evil too, covered up a COVID outbreak at their Postville plant. ONCE AGAIN, IT IS SO EASY TO NOT BE TERRIBLE LIKE THIS, AND YET. I HAVE BEEN FURIOUS ABOUT THIS COMPANY FOR YEARS NOW AND I WOULD LIKE TO STOP BUT THEY HAVEN’T SO I CAN’T.
On a happier note: i have etrogs from that farm in California.
Lulavquest 2020 has been marginally less successful so I just ordered open date palm fronds instead.
It’s fine. I’ll have something. Assuming my cold goes away soon enough for me to build a sukkah. I’m definitely gonna make a zine about this experience.
On the secular side:
Jewish Currents is hosting a series of free history webinar lectures on Jews and class in US history, including confronting the common narratives we get about these topics. Individual sessions are 1910s:Organized Workers, 1950s: Affluence and Its Discontents, 1960s: Leftist Professionals, and 1980s: Philanthropic Establishment, each with their own panel of experts.
a neat thing on Yom Kippur balls, because anarchists love to party
