The ideal January newsletter would arrive in your inbox and explain to you that everything is going to be ok, and that there is a plan as well as people trained to execute it. It would roll back the horror of these last few endless days and give you step-by-step instructions on how to feel better and get back to where we were, and then do better.
If you receive such a newsletter, please let me know.
All I can do is keep working and keep writing. I keep supporting the work of people who put their ass on the line to try and fix the world, and also the people who's work reminds me that a better world is possible. I hope you do, too.
My own work does not argue for that better world. It typically does the opposite, holding up the dark mirror and showing you the darkest timeline in case your own imagination fails to terrify you. It is the work of writers like Octavia Butler, Ursula K. LeGuin, Margaret Atwood, and P.D. James that I am continuing, because of what they taught me.
Thank you, first readers and friends and folks all over, for helping me do that. Thank you for buying my books and checking them out at the library and telling your friends and posting pictures of your horrified faces while you read. You're literally helping me build my dream life, and I can't thank you enough for that.
So, to thank you and to make this very strange year a little better, here's what I'm doing.
- The Book of Etta will be published on February 21, 2017. I cannot wait for you all to read it and talk to me about it.
- I'll be reading from Etta and talking about it at the Booksmith, at Borderlands, and at Pegasus to get started. I'm working on more tour dates, so stay tuned!
- In March, my husband John and I will take our first cruise. But not just a regular cruise, a NERD CRUISE. I am reading from Etta aboard ship as well, and there will be pictures. I've never been so excited about a trip as I am about this.
- The picture above is from the best interview I've ever given, which is here.
- I'm writing the next book in the Road to Nowhere series, and here's your exclusive content for this letter: it's called The Book of Flora.
- I'm also writing a novel outside of that series. And also another one. I'm writing a lot, you guys. Short stories are also on their way to you.
That's it from me this month. Be good to each other. Make art out of your life and yourself and do as much as you can while you are free and able to do it.
