Extending a promise

Just over a month since we last talked and the Twin Cities is holding its breath. We are waiting to see if Operation Metro Surge is actually ending.
In 2020, I promised that I would donate my royalties to a handful of social justice orgs for the next five years. I’ve decided to extend that promise until I need my royalties to live on.
Will I ever be a full-time writer? Who knows. I actually like my day-job. And, ironically, not depending my royalties for groceries gives me a lot of freedom. I write the stories that excite me and I believe in.
I am adding a charity to the list. The fund was set up in the wake of ICE’s disruption to restaurants in the Twin Cities.
Restaurants all around the Twin Cities have been hit hard. Aggressive, at times unlawful, immigration enforcement has targeted their employees. That same enforcement has kept many of their regular customers at home.
On top of those stressors, some restaurants have generously opened their doors to support protestors and observers.
Rounding up, my 2025 royalties were about $75. I plan to make my donation on Feb 18 so it will doubled.
I wish I could say I’d written another chapter. But I made a photo essay instead. A chapter made of images? I’ve linked to the Mastodon post, but you can also find it on my Instagram or Bluesky.

Attached: 1 image I went on a walk this morning to Pretti's memorial. Ended up making a photo essay. Each photo represents some small way communities are finding to resist that I've seen over the past few weeks. One post per image. Join me on my walk. (1/30) #iceout
Enjoy. Stay safe. Take care of each other.
