Insights from May’s meetup, our upcoming events, and a brief poll on funding!
Well hi! How’s it going? Welcome back to this monthly-or-less missive to you, the community built around the social (media) meetups and mixers.
Are you enjoying London’s rather glorious sunshine? Or are you in Cannes? London’s feeling like Cannes right now tbh. At least in terms of the thermometer.
May’s meetup was rather excellent…
… we heard from Rowena Wyles on “writing for woke in an anti-woke world”, and in the all-room panel we discussed whether the content we made was moving the needle, or moving the audience? It went, as always, in unanticipated directions. It also marked the first time I gave one of the 5-minute talks, on feedback cultures. Having since done some maths, I realised that means that I gave the 42nd 5-minute talk at one of my events. As a Douglas Adams fan, this brings me satisfaction.
Upcoming meetups
We have two more meetups before taking a break in August:
The next meetup is next week, Tuesday 24th June, and we’ll be in Fitzrovia. As always, there are a couple of spots reserved for people on this list who put their hands up. HMU if that’s you.
And then we’re back one more time on Tuesday 29th July, before taking a break in August.
Advertising other people’s events
LucidLink, past and future sponsors of the meetups, are running their second ever LucidLink-up on the 26th June. And a mini poll, on funding
I chat with a lot of you on the regular (there’s 214 of us now, by the way), and a topic that’s been coming up a lot recently is around sources of revenue.
I had four conversations in the last week with smart people looking for investment to scale. Others are seeking brand money (especially in offering branded entertainment). And an equally sizeable group are looking to optimise revenues around their own IP.
An incredibly common motif in conversations is that many of you are pushing in new directions to find your model.
And so I wondered, what is your current model? And what do you need to unlock it / really make it sing?
I’ve no idea what the response rate on a poll in an email will be, but I’d love to better understand what this group is looking for - and to see if there are ways we can help each other unlock those avenues. There’s a 3 question poll here, and if we get sufficient responses, I’ll share the results in the next newsletter.
