Google has announced changes to nofollow tags, something that was initially implemented to help combat the rise of backlinking. It was meant to aid search engines in making distinctions between the relevance of links and those people leaving them. There are alternatives to nofollows depending on your preferences, such as sponsored and UGC, but it seems like a lot of effort for no guarantee of return if you wanted to start changing link attributes.
