Session 5: The Toddler Camping Chair
In June 2018 Caitlin and I both needed to travel for work and so Emery’s Godparents watched him for a few days. To make this work we bought a small blue toddlers camping chair so he’d have a place to sit at their house without needing to haul our highchair across town. It worked and he loved it. Two years later now, Emery and Mara take turns sitting in it while having outdoor snacks in our backyard. Seeing its sun-worn canvas glowing in yesterday’s wonderful sun shine, I decided to try taking pictures of it. As you can see, resulted varied.
Photo 1: What if I don’t dilute the developer?
The chemicals that I bought are all concentrated. Each one having its own dilution rate. After last weeks success in painting the diluted developer onto the photo paper I thought I’d see what painting on the real stuff does. I won’t be doing that again.
Photo 2: Washed out blue chair
Of the bunch, this one is my favorite. In a way it’s two photos in one as I kicked the camera a few seconds in so there is a ghost of the blue chair to the left of center. This was exposed for just over a minute. I’m not sure if that is too long or if something else is causing the center of my photos to wash out. I was able to use some settings in Google photos to improve the contrast a bit. Ideally though, that is not needed.
Photo 3: Headphones left on photo
In this last photo, I tried to move the blue chair closer to the camera to have it take up more of the frame. In doing so I forgot that the cameras position near the ground meant that moving the chair forward would cut the top of it off. A bit frustrated when this one came out of the chemicals, I left it on my work bench and jumped into a video call with friends. When the call was done, I set my headphones on top of it not to return until today. The brown markings on these photos are caused by the headphones and cable. I don’t understand why this happens, but I’ve seen it a few times when I leave something too close to drying photos. I’m guessing its some sort of chemical reaction. Does that sound right to you?
Donuts
Like everyone else, Caitlin and I have been baking a more during the pandemic. This Friday we decided to try our hand at donuts. They turned out pretty well. The recipe we followed made about 15 donuts and so we cooked them over a few days. The first batch we filled with strawberry jam, fresh strawberries and cream. In the second batch I filled one with bacon and apricot jam. For the third batch we cut holes out of the middle and had them with lots of powered sugar. All of the donuts were fried in olive oil which is all we had. We thought they’d have an olive oil taste, but they did not.
I hope you are all well. If you have any suggestions for random house hold items to take pictures of, please let me know.
