MCP Verified #1: 427 of 750 MCP servers actually work

Preheader: The first weekly test of the MCP ecosystem: what works, what breaks, and why.

Hi there,

This is the first MCP Verified report. In our test run on Oct 19, 2026, we installed and launched 750 public MCP servers from the official MCP registry (300 npm, 150 PyPI, 200 remote HTTP and 100 legacy SSE). We checked whether each one completes the MCP handshake and lists its tools.

427 worked (57%). That's up from 422 in our Oct 13 baseline run. Most of the rest need an API key or config (we don't supply secrets), crashed on start, failed to install, or no longer respond at their URL.

By type

  • npm (300): 209 work (41 also passed a tool call). 39 need config, 34 crashed, 12 failed to install, 3 timed out.
  • PyPI (150): 73 work (19 passed a tool call). 57 need config, 15 crashed, 3 failed to install, 2 timed out.
  • Remote HTTP (200): 134 work. 47 need credentials (untested), 18 are dead.
  • Legacy SSE (100): only 11 work. 69 are dead.

What broke since our last run (3)

  • io.github.Aureliolo/gdharness: works -> handshake failed
  • io.github.cyanheads/clinicaltrialsgov-mcp-server: works -> install failed
  • io.github.Carlos-VLab/cerebro: works -> dead

What got fixed (9)

  • io.github.artokun/comfyui-mcp: now works (tool call ok)
  • io.github.webdriverio/mcp: now works
  • io.github.D4umak/heylead: now works
  • io.github.AdonaiVera/fiftyone-mcp-server: now works (tool call ok)
  • io.github.AKzar1el/mcp-trendpulse: now works
  • io.github.sadri-dridi/cc-mx: now works
  • io.github.dario933/grith-mcp: now works
  • io.github.mcp-dir/sefaz_mg_nfce_resumida-mcp: now works
  • io.github.chetparker/uk-data-api: now works

Reliable and popular

  • com.browser-use/browser-use: works, 2 tools (PyPI 7,762,435 downloads/30d)
  • io.github.microsoft/playwright-mcp: works, 25 tools (npm 3,431,974/wk)
  • io.github.firebase/firebase-mcp: works, 14 tools (npm 2,017,199/wk)
  • io.github.ChromeDevTools/chrome-devtools-mcp: works, 32 tools (npm 1,440,876/wk)
  • io.github.upstash/context7: works, 2 tools (npm 561,384/wk)
  • io.snyk/mcp: works, 12 tools (npm 370,120/wk)
  • io.github.taylorwilsdon/workspace-mcp: works, 120 tools (PyPI 248,936/30d)
  • io.github.callstack/agent-device: works (tool call ok), 59 tools (npm 180,183/wk)

Download counts come from the npm and PyPI public download stats.

Quick tips

  • "Needs config" usually doesn't mean broken. The server wants an env var or API key, so check its README.
  • Pin versions in your MCP config. A new release can break a server that worked last week.

How we test: we install each package, start it in a sandbox with no credentials, run initialize and tools/list, and make one harmless zero-argument tool call where one exists. Caveats: single region, no auth-gated testing, Node 20 only.
