The Roundup - 11/5
Here's some hotness from the past week
Trying this out, a Sunday newsletter with some recommendations to start your week off with. Here’s five things to put on your radar.
Paint It Black, Famine
Any time Philly hardcore heroes Paint It Black do anything, it’s noteworthy. A whole-ass new album? A stop-everything event. The band sounds fiery as ever here, ripping through 8 tracks with their trademark vitriol, with Yeems delivering another set of literate, thoughtful screeds. There’s something to be said for only releasing music when its of the highest quality. The wait may be excruciating, but when you have a catalog as near-flawless as Paint It Black’s, it’s hard to complain.
Save Ends, “Baseball Awesome”
I love Save Ends. Since I first saw them open for Lemuria back at Church in Boston, I’ve been a fan, and I’m glad to have gotten to know the band over the years. Great music, great people. It’s been a while since they put anything out (2017’s A Book About Bad Luck) and any music is welcome. This was part of Tor Johnson’s anniversary 7” series, which I had ordered and was stolen off my doorstep. I’m still sad about that. Anyway, I’m glad we all get to finally hear this jam.
Ghost Plant, Ghost Plant
A friend of mine up in the Boston area plays bass in this band, and they just released their debut EP. They mine a lot of the same indie-emo influences that bands like Lemuria do. Proceeds go to We Need Diverse Books, too, so worth grabbing on Bandcamp.
Ozone, Shutting You Down 7”
Yo, Ozone is sick. I don’t know what is happening down in Fort Worth (someone get me a scene report) but this band is bringing the mosh in a big way. They remind me of bands like Gulch, Sunami, etc. The latest in a series of 7”s maintains the quality of the previous releases. I’m glad this one is getting a push from New Morality Zine, now I just need them to tour the East Coast.
Daya, “Downtown”
This dance single dropped back in September, so it’s not new but it’s not some archive pick either. Anyway, it has been stuck in my head since then and I cannot get it out. It keeps showing up on my weekly last.fm listening despite being a single song. At just over two minutes long, it’s probably as long as it needs to be, but if I could get a 12” extended maxi remix, I’d be very happy indeed.
There we go. I hope you all had a great weekend. Catch you next time!
