New Post: New Investment: Harmattan, and the Visceral Need for Defense AI

Please read full post here

In venture capital, some investments require squinting into an uncertain future and imagining a market that may one day materialize. Investing in European defense is no such exercise: the need is immediate, urgent, and visceral—unlike anything we’ve seen in a long time.

The drivers are obvious: a World War II–scale war has returned to Europe; the world order is shifting in ways that are forcing America’s allies to pursue far greater military self-reliance; and the nature of warfare itself is changing, with the unmistakable rise of robotics (especially drones) and AI.

Enter Harmattan AI, a Paris-based startup named after the powerful, dry wind that blows along the West African coast. Harmattan builds full-stack defense systems—engineering-grade hardware fused with embedded AI—to deliver fast, autonomous performance where seconds matter.

Practically, that means a family of autonomous drone systems named after deserts: Gobi, a high-speed UAV designed for rapid interception of hostile drones; Sonora, a small unmanned aerial system designed for training; and Sahara, an autonomous, UAV-borne radar system. Harmattan builds the whole stack—software, AI, and hardware.

Harmattan is led by Mouad M’Ghari, an exceptional young founder. A product of France’s elite institutions (École Polytechnique and École Normale Supérieure) and MIT, Mouad brings deep training in machine learning and mathematics. It’s telling of this moment that a founder like Mouad chose to do his life’s work in defense rather than follow the default path into Big Tech. He’s surrounded himself with an outstanding group of co-founders and early employees, including veterans of Europe’s drone, hardware, radar, and RF industries (Parrot, Safran, and others). Harmattan has quickly become a talent magnet in Paris and beyond.

The team is in a hurry, and their pace has been extraordinary. In just 14 months, Harmattan went from company inception to winning a Program of Record, an extraordinary pace by any standard. Since then, it has been awarded multiple Programs of Record across Europe, including with the French and UK defense establishments.

Today, Harmattan AI is officially coming out of stealth and announcing a $200M Series B, led by Dassault Aviation—a perfect strategic partner for the company. We (FirstMark) were honored to lead the Series A about a year ago, after a seed led by our friends at Atlantic Labs. We’re excited to write our third check into the company in this round.

For all the reasons Europe matters right now, it’s important to note that Mouad and his team are building a global company. Harmattan is already active in the U.S., as well as the UAE and Asia—with a clear ambition to become a defining defense prime for the AI era.

P.S. Of course, Harmattan is recruiting top talent.
