We writers are subject to a lot of superstitions, just like fishermen and baseball players and everybody else whose job relies on luck and the vagaries of fortune and nature as much as skill.
One of those superstitions revolves around volume of work—metrics and hustle, basically. The floating idea that you have to write every day and you have to write 2000 words a day or ten pages a day or whatever it is that some guru is telling you you have to do to be a success.
I think of this every year when Nanowrimo rolls around. And it ties into the whole gamification and metrics thing that I am currently in absolute revolt against.
