Hello, friendlings.
They tell you not to write to the market, especially if you’re a writer who isn’t already publishing regularly. They tell you not to chase the Hot New Thing, because by the time you get there, the Hot New Thing will have moved on.
But how then, you ask, do you remain relevant? How do you keep your work fresh, and keep from becoming dated and embarrassing, like a 1998 John Irving novel or something?
The answer is short and simple, but it isn’t easy. You have to live in the world, and you have to keep growing as a person.
