How to establish a writing habit in five minutes a day.
I shared this on Bluesky with my friend C.L. Polk, who was struggling with being stuck on a story they are working on. It’s very simple, and it works.
When you get up in the morning, before you do anything else—brush your teeth, make coffee, let the dog out—anything!—sit down and write three sentences.
They don’t have to be good sentences. They just have to exist. And they can be on any creative project you need to get done… If you have more time, you can write more. Or you can then get up and make your coffee and do your morning chores and come back to the writing later if you have time.
Doing it first thing in the morning, and with time pressure, and with a tiny limited goal, means you tend to power through it and get it over with. And there are very few excuses not to write three sentences.
If you get sidetracked by something else (This morning I sent a promo skyte and briefly got sucked into Bluesky) then do it as soon as you finish with whatever distracted you. But try not to get distracted; it works better if you don’t.
Hope some folks find this helpful,
Best,
Bear
