Holding out for a hero

So much writing advice is fucking situational, you know? And yet it’s so often presented as absolute.

Here’s one that I have offered in my time, but it occurs to me that I was phrasing it wrong. Jump on every opportunity!

Except don’t.

Really, it should be “Jump on every decent opportunity.” Jump on every opportunity that advances your career. Jump on every opportunity that doesn’t detract from other, better opportunities, that doesn’t exhaust you, that doesn’t keep you from actually making a living without wearing yourself out.
