New episode with Sandy Oppenheimer: Painting with paper
Materially Speaking is back for our autumn series, and Mike, Gail and I are delighted to bring you more artists talking about the materials they choose to work with, and telling us why.
We hope you enjoy their stories.
Our latest episode is out now
Listen to Sandy Oppenheimer: Painting with paper
Sandy started as a ceramicist and came to Italy to join her partner where she loved Pietrasanta’s landscape but didn’t take to marble.
She learned about shadow and light from watching the marble sculptors, but an opportunity to take a three month artist residency in a paper making village in Japan changed her direction completely.
There she found an economy of stroke and a muted palette which inspired her journey working with paper.
Gail Skoff and I met Sandy at Pescarella studios, in Vallechia, on the road between Pietrasanta and Carrara. As we entered the large studio space, Sandy was calmly taping collages onto the wall, for a pop-up exhibition she was staging.
Her beautiful collages feature fruits, wine bottles and inviting cups of cappuccino - with froth you can almost taste. There’s a three dimensional effect on wooden spoons that she has created with papers of different shades.
Sandy speaks about an ongoing series of womens’ portraits called Women in the World. In this project she aims to recognise the struggles and successes of notable women who have made a special contribution to the world.
