Materially Speaking launches with Maria Gamundi: Spirito Libero
We are thrilled to let you know that the first episode of podcast Materially Speaking is now live.
Venuzuelan born Maria Gamundi tells how she chose marble for an enormous sculpture, Selene, and the emotional journey she took creating a memorial, Spirito Libero, for a young woman who lost her life on the road.
Maria Gamundi, Spirito Libero, 2019
Maria is a sculptor working mainly with the female figure. She was born in Caracas but studied at the Pratt Institute in New York before coming to Pietrasanta in Italy in 1973 where she was one of the few women carving in marble.
For one recent commission she helped fulfill the dream of a grieving mother. Maria tells the touching story of how the two of them came together to create something to remember the girl and act as a warning to drivers.
