A UMass Dartmouth freshman is dead and his football program is reeling after a night out in Providence ended in violence early Saturday morning. Marvins Antoine, 18, an incoming running back, was stabbed multiple times in the chest outside a Wendy's on the border of a Providence nightclub district, hours after his team lost a home game to Framingham State. His teammate, 19-year-old defensive back Kensley Macean, was also stabbed and is expected to survive. The accused killer isn't a stranger — it's another UMass Dartmouth student, 19-year-old Chukuwnonoso Uzoma-eze, who police say is not on the football team and who was taken into custody by campus police before being handed to Massachusetts State Police for extradition to Rhode Island.

The details that are emerging are the kind that make a story like this land hard: a fight that started inside a club called the Mezzo Lounge and spilled across the street into a fast-food parking lot, teammates trying to protect each other, a freshman who'd barely started his college football career. Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez says murder is currently the only charge filed, and investigators are still working out exactly what triggered the confrontation.
