Italy's environmental fragility & some books
A data card on environmental EU funds spent by population in Italy
Hello dear subscribers (it’s been a while), and welcome to the few of you who despite my long hiatuses between posts still sign up :)!
I am mentally planning vizzes for next year, I’ve been reading a few great texts which I’d like to do something about. A couple recommendations:
Guns, germs and steel by J Diamond, a cult now (published in 1997 and quite famous) exploring potential reasons whereby it was humans in Europe who ended up developing the most powerful societies and the role of geography in this
The Patriarchs by A Saini (which I really loved): the domination of one sex (guess which one) isn’t “natural” nor a necessary outcome of human development
But back to this edition! I’ve been doing more data cards for the AwareEU project, which aims at raising awareness about the EU Cohesion policy, its projects and how they help European regions develop, with a specific focus on Italy.
All the vizzes I’ve been doing, and will still do, are here, I’m just showing one here about funds per Italian region normalised per population, in regards to environmental projects related to the use of water resources (think of rivers, lakes, etc), which are a particularly sensitive topic in a country which has been shattered by I-lost-count-of many floods just in the recent past thanks of course climate change but also scarce preventative measures, historical bad planning and terrible “not going to tackle this issue” attitude. It is a fragile country where climate issues are clear and start to have a very visible impact (floods, droughts, extreme heat are not the stuff of disaster movies anymore).
You can read more about this here [ITA].
Until next time, hope you’re doing well.
