a short one
Hello hello, this will be a short one.
I probably shouldn’t have hoped to have a bit more time to write today - besides being just as busy as all the other days, today the ordering kiosk at McD wasn’t working and the counter queue was way too long, so I had to go to work without coffee. Which means I’m only kind of partially here, and being extra tired means every sound is louder than usual, the lights are hurting my eyes, and my clothes itch.
Oh and I’m still surrounded by queerphobes and my stomach hurt but oh well.
Interesting Things On the Net!
-
Vault Comics is giving away some (very good!) queer books for FREE during Pride Month. Go here to read up more on which books are being given away, and how to redeem them. At least 4 of the 6 books were already in my reading wishlist so I was pretty excited to see they were included.

LibraryThing is hosting a Pride Month Hunt and it’s a little difficult but a lot of fun! Go here to read up on it and join in. The hunt will go on until the 30th. I spent a couple of hours doing it, stealing time between tasks at work. Speaking of LT, it’s really the best book cataloging system I’ve ever used (yes, including Good Reads which is more about marketing than about reading).
Updates not relating to Pride Month because I’ve been too busy for Pride T_T:
I kind of want to talk about Ms. Marvel so much, but also want to wait til the show is over, but also know that maybe after it’s over I might not feel like talking about it as strongly. I guess we’ll see? For now I just want to comment that it’s so good.
I also started watched the third season of Umbrella Academy today, which I guess will be loosely based on the Hotel Oblivion arc (renamed to Hotel Obsidian here, why). The musical sequence in episode one is chef’s kiss
And I’m looking forward to Only Murders in the Building season 2 on Disney+! Seriously, this show is so underrated. Or maybe it isn’t; I guess based on the stuff popular on Netflix, the average person likes grimdark super violent shows topped with loads of unnecessary angst and sex scenes. This show… isn’t that. Which makes it perfect for me, and maybe not so much for the average viewer? I don’t know.
And, in the bookish front, there’s a new essay on Tordotcom about Murderbot and I love it. I read (well, listened to) the first two Murderbot books ages ago, before I had read up and did more research on autism in my self-dx. journey. So I didn’t really catch a lot of the nuances shared in the essay. I did view Murderbot as aroace and agender, though, so I had related to it a ton already because of that. After reading this essay, I feel like rereading the first two books and finally committing to finishing the series. Will I have time, with all the other rereads I want to do? I guess I’ll have to find out.
From the essay:
‘From the earliest pages of the first book, I was thinking, “Wow, Murderbot is very autistic.” It (Murderbot chooses to use it/its pronouns) displays traits that are prevalent in real-life autistic people: it has a special interest in the in-universe equivalent of soap operas; it hates being touched by anyone, even people it likes; it feels uncomfortable in social situations because it doesn’t know how to interact with people; it hates eye contact to such an extent that it will hack into the nearest security camera to view somebody’s face instead of looking at them directly (which, side note, is something that I would do in a heartbeat if I had the capability).’
I find this interesting because I often feel disembodied and when I’m looking at people directly, I do feel like I’m viewing them through a kind of lens.
There’s a lot more to the essay, but I don’t really want to get into it too much here, because honestly I don’t have the energy to do so and also you can just read it! The comments are really good, too.
Stay safe!
