Excitement

The first island marble was spotted on the landscape here on Tuesday! Not by me. I was out there at the same time as the other person but probably in the wrong spot with the wrong gear. The zoo-issue binos leave a lot to be desired.

I got to see one Thursday, though!

Mostly photos this week. Some of you might know I sleep with a CPAP machine now and it’s been malfunctioning. I haven’t been sleeping very well.

Here’s a really good photo…

They’re beautiful little guys in person. Hopefully I can share a better photo of them on the landscape soon.

These Cabbage whites (Pieris rapae) look deceptively like Island marbles on the wing, and I’ve spent a good amount of time chasing them only to find out they’re not my mark. Cabbage white females have 2 dark spots, males have 1 (in addition to dark wing tips, that are often not very visible in the early spring).
I promise I can take a photograph if the subject stays relatively still. Fairly certain this is a Silvery blue (Glaucopsyche lygdamus), a type of gossamer-winged butterfly (Lycaenidae).
FOX - Foxes were introduced on the island in the 20th century to control rabbit overpopulation. They were imported from a fur company, so they come in all sorts of colors. I like the pale red (pictured) and the dark gray with silver tipped fur.
Some sort of click beetle, likely Selatosomus suckleyi
These march flies (in the genus Bibio) are everywhere in some of our transects, hanging on for dear life in the coastal wind. Finally getting the hang of this macro lens - it fit my old phone but not my new phone 🙃
]Serendipity Used Books - very cozy very good
I got a Far Side collection, a little mini book about women artists, and this magnificent cookbook.
This is the first recipe. Off to a good start. I think we might have to host a 70s cocktail party soon.
My office view of Mt. Baker the other day - while out surveying for host plants and butterflies
