Ni! Roundtable and paper proposals celebrating the 50th anniversary of Monty Python and the Holy Grail

In the past 50 years, no film has generated more scholarship among medievalists than Monty Python and the Holy Grail. But the film is far from some specialist obsession, as it has transcended cultures, generations, and even mediums, as Spamalot is still active after 20 years and currently touring North America.  In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of its release, MAPACA's Film and Medieval/Renaissance areas would like to sponsor a panel and/or a roundtable discussion about the film and its impact on film comedy and on representations of medieval English culture in popular film/television. Possible paper topics might include Monty Python and the Holy Grail:

  • in the context of the tradition of British humor

  • and the representations of Arthurian legends

  • and medieval historiography

  • and other cinematic/tv representations of medieval England

  • and its influence on film and television comedy

  • in historical context (e.g. the rock music scene of the seventies, as noted British rock acts financed the film)

If you wish to participate in a roundtable discussion, please contact either Diana Vecchio (dmvecchio@widener.edu)  or Tom Grochowski  (tgrochowski@sjny.edu). If you have a paper proposal, please submit it only to the Film Studies area.   Ni!
