Interlude III: Moving on

Or: why I don't want to be associated with a site that pays to platform Andrew Sullivan and Glenn Greenwald

With everything that’s happened in the world over the last year and a bit, I want to do more to be actively supportive of marginalised groups. That includes taking myself away from systems of oppression whether that oppression is direct or indirect (I don’t give passes). Substack is one of them.

It’s a long story and I’ve only been able to pick up second-hand information but the gist is Substack has been paying a select group of writers including some very shitty men like Andrew Sullivan and Glenn Greenwald.

I recommend you read ‘Here's why Substack's scam worked so well’ by Annalee Newitz and anything Danny Page has tweeted about Substack such as this thread.

The issue is two-fold:

  • Substack is pretending to be a platform and publication for anyone when their main priorities lie with writers they chose

  • Those writers are bigots

You can decide whether you think that’s right or wrong amongst yourselves but from my perspective, I don’t want to be part of it so I’m moving the newsletter to Tiny Letter effective immediately.

I’ll keep the previous editions here for posterity and SEO (the links back to my sites are important!) but Issue 9 will be on Tiny Letter.

And that brings me to the next steps. I’ll be transferring details over to that platform but if you’d prefer not to be part of my new Tiny Letter newsletter, leave a comment or otherwise contact me on Twitter or by email and I’ll remove you from the list.

I guess that’s it. See you on Tiny Letter soon!
