Classes

Saturday June 21: Medieval Silver Casting with Ulysses Jackson
Meet the friend of medieval metal smiths - let’s cast silver in cuttlefish bones. We will cover some history, make a form, cast some silver, and do some finishing work.

Wednesday June 25: Creative Patchwork: Mending and Embellishment with Sophie Stratyner
In this all-levels hand sewing workshop, participants will explore different techniques of visible clothing mending and patchwork with the goal of adding personality and rejuvenation to our wardrobes. The most sustainable thing you can wear is something you already own! Bring a few garments and a creative attitude to this class where we will cut, place, stitch, and embellish our way to a more sustainable wardrobe.

Saturday June 28: Soft Book Expression with Sophie Stratyner
Conceptualize and create a meaningful personal narrative through the making of a soft fabric artist’s book. Participants will brainstorm structure by considering different bookbinding techniques, fabric choices, layout, and text. We will use pochoir (stencil) printmaking to create simple imagery for our books, layer and collage with fabric to create depth, and employ various hand stitching and embroidery techniques to put our pieces together. Utilizing design elements such as texture, value, and form, participants will tell their own story through an artist’s book.

Saturday-Sunday July 5-6: Magewappa: Bentwood Box with Brendan Gaffney
In this two-day workshop, come learn to make your own bentwood bento lunch box! Magewappa, literally bentwood box, are traditional boxes made with thin cedar sides and stitched with cherry bark that have been made in Akita Prefecture in northern Japan for more than a thousand years. This process has been adapted for American woods and cherry bark, and each student will go home with their own traditional box, ready to carry their lunch, keepsakes or precious things.

Saturday July 19: Intro to Scrimshaw with Ulysses Jackson
Let’s scratch the surface of this magical art. We will make our tools, prepare a surface, learn shading techniques, and tips around pigmenting.

Off we go.
