Saturday January 31. 2D Looking Like 3D: Drawing and its Systems of Depth and Perspective with Mercedes Teixido
Many drawing traditions use the illusion of depth as a creative or a diagrammatic tool. This workshop will introduce a few distinct approaches, each with their unique history. Think about overlapping forms, quilts with patterns of illusion and paintings that use linear perspective to mimic the way that our vision experiences space. This fast pace class will use a variety of materials and techniques to encourage experimentation with the aim of enriching the artists toolbox towards the invention of one’s own technique.
Saturday February 7. Play and Improvisation: Drawing as Process with Mercedes Teixido
Surrealist drawing engages drawing as an event. Fluxus used the idea of a prompt to activate the making of an art piece. Collaboration and the disruption of strict representation allow for all kinds of impulses to arise and land on the paper. This workshop is an invitation to enter the fluxus and surrealist mindset through historic exercises and even our own invented games. Be prepared for your making to outpace your thinking as we let ourselves be guided by unexpected and unnamable sources.
Saturday February 28. Intro to Spoon Carving with Charlie Downs
This hands-on, entry-level workshop will provide participants an immersion into the world of greenwood spoon carving. During the four hour class you'll learn basic knife safety, proper knife grips, and carving techniques, along with thoughts on drying, finishing, and decorating. In the end, you'll walk out with your very own hand carved, edge-finished spoon (almost) ready to stir and/or serve.
Saturday March 7. How to Make a Pattern from a Garment with Lisa Sanders
This intermediate workshop will cover how to make a pattern from an existing garment. It will include how to test the pattern to make sure that it is accurate by cutting and sewing a version in plain muslin. Participants bring a garment to copy.
Saturday March 14. Natural Incense Making with Ulysses Jackson
Learn the basics of incense making, formulation, and smell some unique natural ingredients from foraged local and harvested faraway. We will make a variety of cones to share and take home.
Stay warm!
