losing oneself: update

Hello

The latest from the Losing Oneself project website:

  • embodiment isn’t a match with experience (from Sheets-Johnstone)

  • the starlings and the sun and the self as a mirage of the mind

  • new resources by Miyahara & Mirfin-Veitch and Vida Midgelow

This small pump-priming project is about to end but I’ll continue to update the blog occasionally (particularly as I start into more writing and more video post-production). Will keep you posted.

Hello

Three updates this week from the Losing Oneself project website:

  1. The conceptualisation of body awareness and embodiment as “the human experience of simultaneously having and being a body”.

  2. The moment in improvising when one becomes a passenger, and asking where the horse is going.

Hello

Three new posts this week:

  1. Thinking about Willian James' statement (from a long time ago) that we experience "the feeling of the same old body always there".

  2. In the sensing of a sensation I try and disambiguate sensation, sensing, experience, awareness and consciousness (spoiler: I do a fairly crap job of it)

  3. Katye and I were describing how what we are doing in the practice is delicate and this post describes the prospect of discussing (or putting into words) things that are not easily sayable.

Thanks for reading.

Hello

Just a single post this week called shimmer. It contains a short video of an early prototype to document movement when there is very little movement going on.

Hello

We had a busy week so here are a few links from losingoneself.coventry.ac.uk:

  • 11 March 2024: the paradox of choice – try as we might, we don't ever know what will appear in consciousness next

  • 12 March 2024: nonduality – thought it was time I included what nondual awareness is (or how it is described in words)

  • 12 March 2024: consciousness – and same goes for describing consciousness (or what it is like to be something)

  • 13 March 2024: awareness as modulation of organism and environment – that the skin is not such a useful boundary

  • 14 March 2024: next phase – the studio-based work is complete and a few words about what is next and how the blog will start to change

  • 14 March 2024: data data data – so many images (and including masking and overlaying images from the studio).

  • I've also updated the resources section (which are mostly journal articles at this stage).

Thanks for reading and if you think of anyone who might be interested in this work please do share.

  • 29 Feb 2024: non dual awareness can co-occur with any content – that nonduality is independent of the type of experience

  • 8 Mar 2024: low fidelity documentation of high fidelity experiences.

Hello

Here are links to this week's posts at losingoneself.coventry.ac.uk:

  • 19 Feb 2024: interpretations of sensory signals – perception and top-down predictions and how they seem to contradict the experience of sensing the body in motion

  • 21 Feb 2024: self vs person – human attachment to the notion of self.

  • 22 Feb 2024: me doing into it doing itself – an initial (brief) description of the moment in which the feeling of agency while dancing is transferred.

Thanks for reading.
