Tech Savvy Kids: Parent Talk
Hello Nelson Families,
This week the PAC is bringing in a presenter from SHIFT Education to talk to students in grades 3-5 about digital literacy and safety. Next week, there will be a presentation for parents and caregivers via zoom. During this event, we’ll hear about, and discuss, ways parents can guide or manage their children’s interaction with the online world. Here are the details:
Please RSVP for an evening of education and community connection on Thursday, January 15th, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm online.
Join Jessy Wollen, a Certified Sexual Health Educator, director of SHIFT Eduction, teacher with 16 years of experience, and a parent of three sons, as she facilitates a judgment-free space to discuss parenting with technology.
Tech Savvy Kids: Cultivating critical thinking skills in the age of distraction.

This is a chance to share the strategies that work for your family and the challenges you face. Caregivers are not alone in navigating the wonders and difficulties of life online. We will discuss openly communicating our values about technology and establishing practical ground rules—whether that involves managing screen time or navigating games like Minecraft and Fortnite.
With the new phone-free policy in BC schools, we are fostering language and skills to manage tech for learning. At home, managing tech for entertainment often feels overwhelming. On January 15th, let's reboot the conversation and discuss how to adapt, change, or alter how technology shows up in your home to suit your values. We will also review key concepts the students in Grades 3, 4, and 5 learned at school, from Jessy’s presentations held on Wednesday and Thursday, January 7th & 8th. Attend with your favourite person, a friend, a husband, wife, partner, co-parent to build out Lord Nelson values. We will be talking and workshopping ideas about how we create phone free spaces at home, rules like "tech out together then phone free together," and we will discuss how to talk about phone rules at playdates. What works for you, in your home?
Register for the zoom session:
See you on January 15th from 7:00 - 8:30 PM.
Let's give Jessy Wollen a big Lord Nelson welcome! All caregivers welcome. Please spread the word to increase registration. If you have any specific questions for Jessy, please feel free to reply to this email, and we can add them to a list for next Thursday.
We hope to see you at the event.
Sincerely,
Lord Nelson PAC exec
