[reuters request] wearables
html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"
Dear Subscriber, hi, trust you've had a good break. This is another email to the limited list of industry contacts I think might be able to help me on specific stories. No need to reply to this if you don't feel able to help or it's outside your area. If you'd rather be removed the details are at the bottom of this email.
We're looking to do a quick piece exploring more deeply the wearables revolution to coincide with CES. I'm looking for data/insight/examples/anecdotes addressing the following [particularly interested in really interesting data points, examples and companies or uses we might not have considered or heard of before]:
- What exactly is a wearable device; have we gotten any closer to defining it? Where does it fit with M2M and the Internet of Things? Are sensors part of this world? Where are the boundaries?
- Is the current interest in wearable devices a fad or a reflection of how far we've come? Is this all just industry hype or a legitimate extension of what happened before? How far are we away from meaningful acceptance of wearables?
- what is the interesting aspect to all this: is it medical, enterprise, sport, health, law enforcement, government, automotive, what? Is this all about big data, personal data, just a smaller smartphone, or something more. What job, or jobs, do wearables offer to do?
- What is holding wearable devices back? Where are the bottlenecks -- technology (battery life, screen, power issues, connectivity etc], consumer attitude, design, killer application?
- What companies, big or small, are most likely to prosper in wearables, if any? Samsung et al are obviously in the game, as are Google, but could Apple do better -- hiring folk from Burberry etc suggest them seeing wearables as more about design, fashion, etc, than cyborg-like appendages? Chinese companies all seem to be jumping into smart watches and other wearables -- is the bottom end a better bet for all this?
Thanks in advance. I realise you might only be able to offer thoughts on a few aspects of this, but I hope these questions might spark something where you think you might be able to offer something.
I'm hoping to get a sense of what's on offer by end of business Friday (tomorrow) but if you need more time, or only get to see this Monday, no worries. If you think you can help, drop me a line.
Best, Jeremy
