[reuters request] fingerprint scans
html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"
Dear Subscriber, another request for help to this limited mailing list of industry sources. No need to reply if it's not your area of interest.
I'm looking to write something quickly about the likely inclusion of fingerprint scanning in the new iPhone. So I'm interested in answers to the following:
- What has been holding this technology back from wider acceptance and deployment? We've seen fingerprint scanners in a lot of products over the years, but it never seems to have hit the mainstream except in corporate and institutional settings. Are there any examples of its failed or successful deployments that are worth noting? Has anyone tried to do what Apple might be doing?
- What are the implications of Apple's likely adoption of this technology? What would be the most likely, most exciting, and most disruptive uses of it? Patents etc point beyond merely unlocking the device to ecommerce, retail transactions, authentication for access etc.
- What companies, industries etc are likely to benefit from this, should it come to pass? Where do you see this going?
- Are there other, better technologies out there? Is Apple's adoption of a certain kind of authentication technology a slam dunk for broader adoption?
Other things I'd love to see are any data on this -- adoption, production, projections, component producers, etc etc.
It would be great to get a few lines in the next 24 hours if possible. If it's quicker to just send over a few notes and then follow up over the phone or Skype, feel free.
Thanks in advance. (And thanks to all who replied to my last request; my apologies if not all material could be used.)
Best, Jeremy
