While showing the gallery space I host to artists one reason that has come up for making the space available is helping new and emerging artists find work. This combined with the state of the job market has gotten me thinking about the ways that creativity and art have supported me throughout my career and I wanted to share a couple in today’s newsletter.
Get Out and See Something New Every Day
One of the pieces of advice I remember from a landscape architect professor is to get out every day and see something new. This advice has stuck with me through the years as it has informed the way that I draw and also how I have found work. It has been pretty rare that I found work through a random online job application. Usually, I have found jobs by being out in the city.
Find Your Neighborhood Living Room
“Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name…” Cheers Theme Song
You don’t need to spend your time in a seedy basement bar, but finding a place to be a regular at can lead to some unexpected benefits. Besides the artistic opportunities, having someone like a barista or bartender who recognizes you can have health benefits and lift your mood. It also brings you into contact with the very people who might have a job or opportunity. My journey to becoming a data services manager was launched by a small job search group that met weekly at the local coffee shop I frequented.
Share your work at a gallery or coffee shop
“Baudelaire knew the true situation of a man of letters: he goes to the market as a flaneur – ostensibly to look around, but in truth to find a buyer.” Walter Benjamin
Another good reason to have a Cheers is to have someplace where you can show your work. Many semi-public places like coffee shops love to provide space for people to show their art or creative projects to liven up the space and potentially draw in new customers. Plus, this helps you find people who might be interested in you and what you do. And of course, do not feel limited to just the places you frequent. Artist coop galleries, galleries in public buildings and local art and design competitions can all be great places to share your work. I have often found that I do not make much from shows directly, but they are invaluable for finding clients and jobs.
