With the holidays here it is a time of gathering with friends and family to celebrate a new year and renew our familiar ties. So it seemed like an appropriate time to consider how drawing can be an aid and enhancement to forming and recalling memories. I mostly draw scenes from the world I see around me. A common complaint about art that reproduces a view of something in the world though is that it does not show the emotion of the moment. For these critics, representational art does not capture the true experience of a place since it focuses on the purely visual or retinal experience. I find that representational art does capture emotion for me though not as literally as some of these critics might want.
