Reminder: Any photos of Doultonware for Local History Group on Tuesday 25th March at 2pm?
Southwark Pensioners' Centre Local History Group
Dear Members.
Dr Jane Jordan, Trustee of the Friends of Norwood Cemetery and Lambeth Tour Guide, will speak to us at Southwark Pensioners’ Centre next Tuesday 25th March at 2pm on ‘Henry Doulton’s “Lady Artists”’. If anybody has any Doultonware, she kindly offered to look at photos and tell us about the ceramics next week. One person has sent photos already and it will be good if we can find some more. If you have any Doultonware, please send photos to me sally.lynes@gmail.com and I’ll forward them to Jane.
I’ll send the Zoom link for the meeting at the weekend.
Jane has sent this outline prior to her talk:“Doulton’s Lambeth Art Pottery was remarkable for employing a large number of female ceramic designers and decorators (by 1882 they numbered 229 to 20 male artists and assistants), many of whom studied for years at the Lambeth School of Art while working at Doulton’s. This illustrated talk takes us inside Doulton’s to discover what conditions were like for this pioneering generation of professional women artists, and why a significant number of these women chose long careers over marriage, which at the time was considered woman’s true career. We will focus on the stories of those women and girls who lived in Southwark, from Newington as far as Camberwell.”
Looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday,
Sally
