The Craft

Dear Friend,

The first day of September is so Virgo-esque. School is back, fresh notebooks are opened, sweaters unpacked.

Virgo I is all about The Craft.

πŸœπŸœƒπŸœ‚πŸœ„

The Craft tastes like peppermint on the tongue.

Lamplight illuminates the forest, showing the way.

There is a path you haven’t noticed before opening up; you just have to take the first step.

This micro-season is guided by The Hermit and the 8 of Pentacles. Cards that prioritise the daily magic of showing up to your practice.

There is comfort through connection and self-knowledge formed through consulting existing traditions.

It is the perfect moment to invite you to Atmospheres.

What is Atmospheres?

Atmospheres is a communal writing practice guided by the stars.

Atmospheres uses tiny containers of zodiacal time to sift ideas, feelings, and observations.

Together, we will distill these ideas into potions.

These potions can help us to access the vastness of the cosmos, or a writing project.

The potions will be at the heart of our live rituals together.

The potions have been brought to life by Kening Zhu’s otherworldly illustrations. We have been collaborating on the imagery for the program over the summer, and Kening’s work is at the heart of Atmospheres.

Kening will also be bringing her poetics of internet magic to Atmospheres with a guest workshop in Scorpio season.

What will happen during the live rituals?

I will attune us to the seasonal shifts, give tiny practice notes, and offer accountability, guidance and creative sparks. I will send you down rabbit holes to help you to generate new material, and to rewild, revise, and transform work in progress.

I will hold space for us to be present, soft, and safe. To slow down and be curious together.

You can find out more here.

I hope you will come and make everyday magic with us. The first session will be next week but you can join any time. We will be there.

I will be sharing the first two potions for everyone this week: here is The Craft potion if you would like to explore.

This potion is a gift for Virgo season and to explore the themes that emerge.

πŸ„ Fruit (things that are ready to share)

  • Atmospheres is a communal writing practice, guided by the stars. Join us for everyday magic!

  • Ritual as Artwork

Mutable earth: tiny cauldron, communal rituals, the unexpected.

a starry background with the words - ritual as artwork in white lettering.

A reflection on my experience of making music in community, with items and sounds that were available in the moment.

I used water in three vessels – a tiny cauldron, a glass, and a jug, hit at regular intervals with water poured between them to change the pitch of the notes and traffic as a background carpet of sound.

  • Showing Up

Mutable earth: the craft, inner circle, art

This piece about Kelly Reichardt’s film, Showing Up, explores Virgo I themes.

Showing up to your job when you want to work on your art. Showing up for your art when you’re exhausted from your job. And the crux of the film is about showing up for each other even when it makes you sad, jealous, or insecure

🦠 Spores (tiny ideas)

  • I have been working on so many different projects at once, that I have needed to find a way to stay focused. I have developed hour-long practices for all of my major projects, so that I can move between them. The practices include opening and closing the space, short meditations, music, and deep work. These hour-long potions have inspired the shape of Atmospheres and I am looking forward to exploring this further.

π“Šπ“Šπ“Š Mycelium (relational networks)

  • If you are interested in deep listening, then this Thursday there is a free online conference, Channelling Voice, this Thursday 4th September that β€˜explores the political, historical, embodied and methodological production of voices whose sonic powers can be heard and felt.’ Free to all.

  • Mimi Zacharia has shared a three minute action that you can take today to help support children in Gaza.

  • Helen Jukes has shared Workshops 4 Gaza, an autonomous collective of writers, artists, and educators offering workshops offered in exchange for donations. There are currently workshops on memoir writing and poetry as well as many others.

I wish you a week of fresh mint tea, new pathways, and soft lamplight.

Love, LJ
