Libra Season and Chaos Mushrooms
Dear Friend,
Every time I have walked into the woods in the last couple of weeks, I have seen mushrooms sprouting everywhere.
Fungus is notoriously difficult to categorise, behaving like both plant and animal. It also has a complex intelligence.
Because of this strangeness, fungus once occupied its own taxonomic category of ‘chaos’.
In 1747, Carl Linnaeus, known as the “father of taxonomy”, observed that the seeds of fungus moved in water like fish until “by a law of nature thus far unheard of and surpassing all human understanding” they changed back to plant in their adult life. He proceeded to include fungi in the new genus of “Chaos”.
- Tosca Teran, ‘Chaos Fungorum’
Mushrooms thrive in the autumn damp and cool. They belong to the in-between time of Virgo, mutable earth, but also Libra, cardinal air, because of the spores that travel through the atmosphere, generating new life.

Libra is a season that draws our attention to energy fields whether atmospheric, earthy, or imaginal.
Libra is not just about commitment to other people, but to ideas, creative passions, and ways of living.
There was something religious about it; each plant and mushroom was like a deity, a patron saint, a presence in the woods
