Infinity Mirror
Mirrors, crystals and staged snowfalls are recurring motifs, underscoring the film’s interest in illusion, doubles and the escapist thrill of becoming someone else.
– Tara Brady on The Ice Tower

Dear friend,
I writing this at the very limit of Capricorn season.
As the solstice turned into the new year, I spent some time hibernating then floating underwater, recovering from a virus.
I watched The Ice Tower, a glacial film about mommy issues and fairy tales.
I also spent time looking at the winter light refracted through crystals and incense and thinking about infinity mirrors.
An infinity mirror occurs when two reflective surfaces ‘bounce a beam of light back and forth an indefinite (theoretically infinite) number of times’.
This has helped me to understand the way that creativity can feel linear, scarce, and elusive but that really it is a radically renewable resource.
Instead of feeling behind as the year has begun, I want to share some of my infinity mirrors with you.

Three gift-books that I read right at the end of the year have left me wanting to start reading them immediately over again for their total understanding of the power of atmosphere.

This piece in Parapraxis by Laila Riazi has stayed with me. I was drawn into researching hysterical phenomena from Carol Morley’s The Falling to Naomi Booth’s The Lost Art of Sinking. The intersection of hysteria, enchantment, and trances is highly relevant to my interests. Perhaps to yours too.
I also loved this beautiful meditation on Zohran Mamdani, art, and work by Ali Raz.
My favourite essay this year so far is Christiana Mbakwe Medina’s ‘A Star, a Celebrity, a Famous Person’.

I am so happy that Atmospheres exists in the world and not just in my private imaginings!
I am grateful for this space to explore atmospheric containers with other dreamers.
It would have been impossible without Kening Zhu, who has brought every atmosphere to life with her artwork. Here is some of her writing on the process.
And thank you to M. Forajter for sharing two pieces that emerged from Sagittarius II - Neon in her write-up for Olivia Cronk’s Peripety and/or Tronies.
I will finish this letter by sharing some tiny realms from Capricorn season:

I wish you a week of infinity mirrors, exquisite light, and crystals.
