Little Thoughts About...Issue #22
November Recap
Tom Lake by Ann Patchett - Audiobook read by Meryl Streep
This was a book club pick, and I really enjoyed listening to Meryl read to me! This would have been a 4 star book, but it got a half a star for the audiobook experience. It was a bit slow, but it was a good story.
Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier
This was a JANSA-NJ reading pick. I can’t remember why we picked it, but I ended up liking it more than I thought I would. I mentioned in our discussion that it reminded me of a precursor of a mafia romance book you’d find on booktok. There are broken and broken down characters, illegal activity, life and death situations, and just a whole bunch of shady business going on.
Lady Molly of Scotland Yard by Baroness Orczy - read by Phoebe Judge
A collection of short stories featuring Lady Molly a detective for Scotland Yard. She’s like Sherlock Holmes but not so stuck up when explaining how she solved the case. They were all interesting cases, 13 in all and each short story is one episode of the podcast. They were interconnected, as Lady Molly joins the force to help clear her fiance’s name. He has been accused of murder!
November’s Trope Book:
For November’s Trope - Off Limits I read Forbidden by Beverly Jenkins.
Rhine Fontaine can pass as white and is living as a prosperous politician and businessman. Then he saves Eddy Carmichael and she upends his whole world. She’s spirited and set on her journey to own a restaurant that is until she starts to spend more time with Rhine. She can’t fight her attraction to him both his looks and personality even though she believes he’s white. I thought the story moved a little slow but otherwise it was an enjoyable and educational read. I learned some more about US history, which lead me to doing some research on my own.
I have read 89/100 books for the year. I don’t think I’ll be hitting 100 books this year, but I currently have 6 books checked out of the library that I think I can finish before the end of the year. A lot of romance books!
