Little Thoughts About … Issue #7

Hamilton Book Club Catch Up

Between life, work, and vacation, I basically didn’t have the mental energy to write issues. But I’ve added a weekly task to remember to write these… Let’s see if that lasts!

The last few months have been a mixed bag of books for the book club. I had two DNF and one I really liked.

March - Breakfast with Buddha by Roland Merullo
This one was a DNF. I can deal with an unlikeable narrator, but this one was not one of them. I didn’t care enough about the story to fight my way through; I followed the Nancy Pearl Rule of 50* and then closed the book. This had mixed reviews at the meeting, with one person saying she was interested in reading more from this series.

April - The Crazyladies of Pearl Street by Trevanian
This was the second DNF. This one was more the writing style than the characters. An abridged version of this book may have been readable. That said, from the discussion, it seems this book wasn’t what everyone was expecting from the summary, so I’m kinda happy I didn’t finish it.

May - The Day the World Came to Town by Jim DeFede
This book was 4.75 (out of 5) for me. I liked nearly everything about the book. The little backstories of the people featured and even the history of Gander. My favorite backstory was about Fidel Castro riding a toboggan (look it up!).

This one was also emotional. While reading about the events of 9/11, I could feel my anxiety rising and goosebumps covering my arms. That said, this is one I highly recommend. The .25 that it didn’t get…I wanted an update on some of the people. I honestly was kind of hoping there would have been an anniversary issue with some updates. Add a little happiness to the history of the day.

What I’m currently reading:

  • Spare by Prince Harry - listening to the audiobook while walking, so this is gonna take me awhile

  • Nicholas: Lord of Secrets by Grace Burrowes - This is a reread for me. I got behind in her Regency-era books. There are different series, but they all take place in the same world, and she has a list of books in chronological order. I started my reread a few years ago but stopped. For the summer, I’m picking it back up!

*Nancy Pearl’s Rule of 50
If a reader is under 50 → read 50 pages before giving up
If a reader is over 50 → subtract age from 100 and read that many pages before giving up
