Little Thoughts About ... Issue #14

*tap* *tap* *tap* anyone still out there

Hi! It’s been forever, things got crazy and I just didn’t have the bandwidth to look at my laptop screen for more than gaming for the last few months. Now that things have settled down I thought I’d jump back in with a quick issue just catching you up on what I’ve been reading.

  • Men of the 65th: The Borinqueneers of the Korean War by Talia Aikens-Nuňez - 3.5 stars
My grandfather was a member of the 65th and I’m always looking to read more about them. This was quick easy read with a lot of history but nothing too dense.

  • All Systems Red by Martha Wells - 5 Stars
OMG so good, I’m now hooked on this series, this goes for the rest of the books in this series on the list. I love Murderbot.

  • Compulsory by Martha Wells - 5 Stars

  • Artificial Condition by Martha Wells - 5 Stars

  • Maybe You Should Talk to Someone: A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed by Lori Gottlieb
This was a book club pick.

  • Your Favorite Band Cannot Save You by Scotto Moore - 3.5 stars
The concept was really interesting, but it got a little weird. Not that I mind weird, just wasn’t what I was expecting.

  • The Street Rat’s Guide to Spells and Royalty by L.R. Weltmann - 4 stars
Written by a co-worker. Really liked the world building and the characters, ended on a cliff hanger cannot wait to read book 2.

  • When the Duke Returns by Eloisa James - 3 stars
Pick for the May trope of Arranged Marriage. I enjoyed it, wasn’t the best James book I’ve read.

  • All Summer in a Day by Ray Bradbury - 5 stars
Someone mentioned this in a TikTok or on a sub Reddit post and I was like never read it. Bradbury can tell such a complete and full story in just a few pages.

  • Mind Games by Nora Roberts - 4.5 stars
Another great book, but I wasn’t fully on board for the thing the MC has to overcome for her HEA.

  • A Demon’s Guide to Wooing a Witch by Sarah Hawley - 4.5 Stars
This is such a cute series, I’m hooked and will be reading more. This coupling didn’t make sense at first but I ended up really liking them together.

  • The Beloved by J.R. Ward - 4 stars
So there are already timeline issues with in this series so I wasn’t looking forward to a time jump, and it took me awhile to get into it, but Ward pulls it out in the ends and sets up another romance I cannot wait to read!

  • Out of the Blue by Jason June - 4 stars
This was my June book club pick. I really enjoyed it and was happy with the ending. Just was not expecting the sex scene as the MCs are under 18.

  • Fake it Till You Bake it By Jamie Wesley - 4.5 stars
This was my Christmas gift from my BFFL. It was a box called Once Upon a Book Club and had little gifts to go along with certain scenes in the book. You can see my gifts here. Loved the story, mostly how it featured a football player but wasn’t all about him playing the game. Cannot wait for book 2.

  • Wayward by Chuck Wendig - 4.5 stars
Really loved the story, but felt it dragged in places. Had no idea where he was taking it towards the end, which I love when I cannot predict the ending.

  • Rogue Protocol by Martha Wells

  • Gabriel: Lord of Regrets by Grace Burrowes - 4 stars
This is a reread. A few years ago I started a reread of Burrowes’ books in chronological order which would also help me catch up. I realized that the year was half over and I hadn’t gotten to any of them only to realize I hadn’t read any last year. These are just really solid Regency romances.

  • Exit Strategy by Martha Wells - 5 Stars

  • Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory by Martha Wells - 5 Stars

  • Primal Mirror by Nalini Singh - 5 stars
Another solid book in this series. She’s setting up something big and while I was invested in the romance, I cannot wait to see where she takes this world.

  • Trenton: Lord of Loss by Grace Burrowes - 4 stars

  • The Prospects by KT Hoffman - 4 stars
I loved the concept, the characters and the story, but it just felt a bit too much with the diversity. Not that it’s a bad thing, I just think it was one too many for the book.

  • Blueberries for Sal by Robert MCCloskey - 3 stars
Went to Maine on vacation, kept seeing the book everywhere and my BFFL was like how have you never read this one. So when we got back I read it. It’s really cute, but Make Way for Ducklings is still better.

  • The Women by Kristin Hannah - 4.5 stars
First just so happy to read a women in war story that wasn’t WWII. Second, dammit this woman always makes me cry at the end of her books. Third, this was so good I read it in like 3 days and it’s over 400 pages. 4 hours of Primetime at the Olympics for those 3 days made for good background noise.
