Good cries
My favorite song during a stretch of my early childhood was Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven." I have a distinct memory of being around 7 years old, riding in the back of our minivan on the family's annual road trip from upstate New York to Daytona Beach, Florida. The drive was long and boring—about 18 hours split over two days—so having adequate entertainment was essential. In lieu of a proper Walkman (!), I played my collection of well-worn cassettes on a giant ass boombox with cheap headphones plugged into it.
I dutifully played this mellow Clapton song—which is about the death of his four-year-old son, for godsakes—over and over on that drive. Adding to the ridiculous image of kid-me hooked up to oversized early 90s audio technology, I was also wearing a giant pair of sunglasses and silently mouthing all the words to no one in particular. In other words, looking like a complete freak while my two older siblings rightfully made fun of me. I didn't care. Stop, rewind, play it again.
In many ways I am still that same Feelings Kid. I always cry at weddings. I always cry at endings. I cry extra hard at endings that involve weddings. Though I've since moved on from Eric Clapton, I still enjoy occasionally torturing myself with sad media.
I'm not as much a victim of the intensity of my feelings now that I'm on antidepressants. This medication has a way of smoothing the edges of your experience, clipping the highest screechy highs and the lowest bassy lows, leaving you mostly with the more bearable mid-frequencies. This is mostly a great relief.
Still, crying doesn't come as easily as it did when I was unmedicated. Having a "good cry" now is more of a rare treat, a precious reminder of how it feels to be alive.
Today's list is inspired by the recent series finale of The Good Place, which, no spoilers, but reduced me to sobs at least three times.
What follows is a selection of things that have made me cry in dark movie theaters sitting next to dear friends, at home alone, on airplanes next to complete strangers, and while wearing formal dress in folding chairs in the grass on nice summer days.
