Annoyingly precocious singer-songwriter synchronicities
1) Jackson Browne wrote the song “These Days” at age 16. It was first recorded by German model and singer Nico in 1967 for her album Chelsea Girl.
2) “First Cut is the Deepest” is a canonical heartbreak song that has become a hit single for various artists over several decades. The lyrics describe a person wondering if and how it's possible to love again after losing their first love.
Cat Stevens was 17 years old when he wrote and released the song in 1967.
3) Alex Chilton was the frontman of the beloved but largely commercially unsuccessful band Big Star. Before that, he got his musical start and first brush with fame with the band the Box Tops.
He was 16 years old when the band formed in 1967. He sang the surprisingly-gruff-for-a-kid lead vocals on “The Letter,” which became a No. 1 hit later that year.
I don't know what all these youngsters could have purported to know about the vagaries of love and life, but they wrote three perfect songs about it in the same year.
