Links by Friday 022 - The Problem with Passkeys

Sometimes I think we make new things not because they solve a need we have but simply because they’re new. Maybe it’s age but I find myself fighting against complexity. Yet I fear we are hooked on new, shiny, complex things.

The Problem with Passkeys

As of late, Passkeys are promoted as the killer of passwords and a lot of companies are now manically transitioning from passwords to Passkeys. I don't think that is a good idea.

Communities and Stories

Without communities, we are destined to fail at many of our endeavours simply because great things cannot be done alone.

Every great achievement comes down to two things. — Joan Westenberg

Want to change the world? Start with a story and a tribe. The lives that we have built, the interactions we have with other human beings, every single advancement we’ve made, every life saved, every glorious moment — we owe them all to two inventions: Communities and stories. Without communitie

My Personal Dev Journey

I was a self-taught developer - kept learning and kept delivering lots of web apps single-handedly for almost 5 years at this start-up. I learnt a lot more than just web development - how a start-up runs, how to get clients, crack sales, how social media marketing works and so on.

I love this story because it shows clears how overnight success is a product of years of consistent hard work.

Everything about my journey that got me where I am

Three years ago, if someone had told me I’ll be able to inspire other people (especially women) by sharing my story, I would not have believed them. Things didn’t change overnight of course. Everything I am today is because of years and years of hard...

Innovating Beyond Libraries and Frameworks

I have been a big fan of the write libraries, not frameworks argument for a while now. Lately, I’ve come to ponder that there might be a fruitful expansion to this argument, that we should start to value principles over patterns, patterns over libraries, and libraries over frameworks.

I believe we should look beyond libraries and frameworks and rediscover the value of patterns and principles, and I’d argue that it would lead us to have less breaking changes and add more longevity to the stuff we build.

Framework-less Modern Web Development

Schematics was a simple project as far as architecture goes, and web components and ES6 modules took me most of the way there. I can't see myself building a complex app without a framework.

ESM, Web Components and more native browser features can take you very far without the need for bundling or reaching for a framework.

That's it, see you next time.
