Links by Friday 006 - The Cost of Personalisation

Intro

This week's issue is great if you love to read. There is something for everyone. If you are a Rails developer or simply curious you appreciate one man's experiment to make Ruby 3 run on the first version of Rails.

There's something for everyone.

Develop your Unique Artistic Style

Just as you develop your Self and become more like “you” as you grow up, your artistic voice is doing the same thing. With every experience you have, your Self changes and grows, and with every piece of art you make, your style changes and grows.

The Cost of Personalization

Personalization is now considered an essential business strategy that’s made it’s way into almost every app and service we use. We have even come to expect personalized interactions and get frustrated when this doesn’t happen. We’re willing to sacrifice for the convenience, but at what cost?

My first impression of this site is how beautiful it looks. I love the comfortable font-size and how navigation and section are spaced out. I love how they use graphics the reasonable words per line.

The Cost of Personalization | Humane by Design

Personalization comes with trade-offs: it’s also used to shape, influence and guide our everyday choices and actions. When algorithms make autonomous decisions on our behalf, the visible options we have are hidden from us and we lose personal agency.

Ruby 3 on Rails 1

While I was pretty sure it wouldn’t work right off the bat, I wondered: how many modifications would be necessary to at least reach the iconic “Welcome aboard! You’re riding the Rails!” screen?

Ever wonder if it's possible to you run the Ruby 3 on Rails 1? Well wonder no more. If you love getting into old code, you will love this.

Write Code for the Web

The tldr is

  1. Apple doesn’t care for me as a developer

  2. I should write code for the web

  3. Nothing is set in stone, really

Be loud about the things you love

there’s certainly not one way to design a building or make a website or live a life, and there’s no one genre of film or music or theatre that stands above all the others. There are no perfect video games or novels or cities.

But there is only one way to love something; earnestly, without forgiveness or apology. So be loud about the things you love!

That's it, see you next time.
