Light Industry in London / Soundtrack for The Scar of Shame

Light Industry will soon be presenting a couple of screenings in London, both with the Otolith Collective. The first, on July 1, will be a double bill of Edward Owens’ Remembrance: A Portrait Study (1967) and Alain Montesse’s U.S.S. (1970) at Ibraaz, as part of the Otolith Library-in-Residence there. Here are two films from the margins of New American Cinema, each vital to understanding its legacy but, until recently, largely overlooked. The second, on July 2, is a surprise. That evening, both Light Industry and the Otolith Collective, in back-to-back screenings, will be showing movies at Close-Up as part of the Liberated Film Club, the current premise of which is that only the guest programmer knows in advance what will be on offer.

Last month at Light Industry, in collaboration with Alfreda’s Cinema, we hosted a special screening of The Scar of Shame (1929), one of the most celebrated race films of the silent era. Live accompaniment was provided by Kamau Amu Patton, who composed a score especially for the occasion. That evening’s remarkable performance was also recorded and mixed by Patton, and the artist has made it available here.
