LIFESTYLE Newsletter Vol. 3 No. 4

Nick's LIFESTYLE Newsletter

Girl Scouts are Metal AF (from Reddit)

THIS IS AN INTRODUCTION

Hello again everyone. It's been a few weeks. Has it? TIME HAS NO MEANING. HAPPY SATURWEDSFRIDAYFUCK. I was supposed to be in Jamaica 6 weeks ago but it feels like about 4 years ago right now. Unless I am playing Slay the Spire. TIME MELTS AWAY BABY.

  • An abundance of bullet points this time. BECAUSE THOUGHTS ARE SMALLER WHEN TIME LOSES MEANING.
  • Courtesy of FRIEND OF THE LIFESTYLE Wade: Girl's final for her sign language class.
  • Local superstar Jeremy Messersmith doing a cover of a song a child wrote called "I Wonder What's Inside your Butthole?"
  • I'm sure AOC is divisive, probably less among LIFESTYLE readers, but I could not love her more: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Is Visiting Random Animal Crossing Islands. She may not represent my geography, but she represents what I want out of politics.
  • FRIEND OF THE LIFESTYLE and 20XX LIFESTYLE newsletter award winning Author, Mindy Mejia's new book is out and it's a real page turner. I think. I haven't started it yet. I've been very focused on buckaroo erotica lately, but tonight is the night I am starting it. AND YOU SHOULD TOO. It's getting major pub from Publisher's Weekly and the FUCKING NEW YORK TIMES!! Also, buy it from Once Upon a Crime and support local business. DEVIN packs the book SOOOO WELL. Better than I would wrap a child.
  • If you are looking for something fun on Saturday nights, every other Saturday Jake Rudh has been doing "180 Minutes," a club night on Twitch. It's like going to Transmission, but with no people and the bar happily serves water and tea (at least at my house).
  • We are spending more money on local businesses, gift cards and eating out more than ever because we are in a place to try to help and give back. I would encourage you to do the same if you can.

THIS IS THE END OF THE INTRODUCTION.

2 THINGS THIS NON-LINEAR TIME FRAME:

ITEM THE FIRST:

LET'S BUILD SOMETHING INCREDIBLE. Writer/journalist Kevin Kelly, one of the founders of Wired magazine, recently turned 68 and posted a blog of 68 pieces of Unsolicited Advice. I thought this would be a wonderful crowd participation thing and if all the LIFESTYLE readers send in 5, we could have an amazing list. YOU HAVE HOMEWORK. Don't worry, you have the time to do it. YES, YOU DO. Here are my 5, please send yours in and I will compile them anonymously for the next issue.

  1. You are not alone. You may think you are, but you are wrong.
  2. Your job is to prove love through your actions towards yourself and others.
  3. It is not how much you make. It is how much you save.
  4. Things that were important in the past will cease to be important in the present. And that is ok.
  5. You will likely not be great. The success in a skill/talent we see celebrated is rare and special and not achievable by everyone. You can however, succeed in being a descent person, which is not as celebrated but ultimately more important.

I look forward to adding yours here.

ITEM THE SECOND:

UPDATES FROM COVID TIMES. The world has gotten weird in the past 2 months due to this COVID thing. I'm sure we have all experienced parts of it, whether it is the plexiglass everywhere or the intricate dances we need to do around people we know and don't. The missing of touch between friends, the increased texts or FaceTime calls among people you normally would just see every week. I don't want to dwell on this too much, but here are some random things I have found around this topic:

An amazing article in The Atlantic: The Coronavirus Revealed America's Failures. I honestly can't add anything to this, it just lays it out in a way that I agree with.

This article in McSweeny's: Sure, the Velociraptors Are Still On the Loose, But That’s No Reason Not to Reopen Jurassic Park. Pitch perfect satire for these times.

This flashback quote. I will plug my nose and vote for Biden, just as I did for Hilary and Obama before, but goddamn, I just don't know what I will do if we have another 4 years like the last. Also, a quick plug for Political Wire, my favorite news source. It is an aggregation site, but they also have some commentary pieces for members that are quick but efficiently distill news and put it into perspective.

Also, a quick plug for my favorite primary news source, the Christian Science Monitor. YES, I GET IT. The title throws you off. It is funded by The First Church of Christ, Scientist. IT IS NOT SCIENTOLOGY. Nor is the Monitor slanted towards Christianity. It is a funded as a public service by the church and they are one of the few remaining journalism organizations that have international bureaus. Just super solid reporting and longer weekly features.

GRATITUDES:

The Wednesday night Jackbox crew. Since this thing started a group of 8 of us have gotten together to play Jackbox and have a FaceTime running while we do it. It has been a fun time and gives TIME MEANING since you are catching up with friends on a regular, scheduled basis. We had some technical issues early on, but HERO WADE rented a VPS so it is silky smooth for all of us. If you are not part of the crew and want to join, let me know!

FAVORITE THING TO GO IN MY EARHOLES THIS WEEK: Now that we are done with the 2010's, I have made a mix of my top 100 songs of 2010-2019. I have created an Apple Music playlist here (with AMAZING ART from my wife), but you can also convert it to your music service of choice using TunemyMusic.
