NEWS LTR №17: Questions

New work, for sure.

I imagine you think that life at the LettError Type Foundry is pretty dull because you have not received a newsletter? No fire under the blast furnace, the crucible empty, the library boxed up, the drawing room eerily quiet, all because you have not heard from me?

Well, as a matter of fact, the library is currently all wrapped up! The building is getting a sustainability overhaul with new insulation and efficient windows. Very good for the coming winter. A bit of a hassle because I do not have my books and screens. But in a couple of weeks it should be back to normal.

Apart from that I can tell you I am drawing and I like where it is going and I am building these small environments to observe and proof and it is new and exciting. [gestures vaguely]. I can not give you the letters for now, you will just have to take my word for it.

The LettError Drawing Room in a right state.

Color pencil and ink drawing of 5 fish. All rather colorful and cartoonlike. Two fish appear to wear glasses. They all seem friendly.
Visjes, pen, color pencil, paper. Not a family portrait.

PDF Specimens für Alle

In the mean time, did you know LettError has some nice PDF specimens that show the fun and clever things the fonts can do? These are links from the website but often hidden under tons of facts and tidbits I’m eager to share. So, for your immediate download and critical inspection I offer you:

  • LTR NCND: Textured Variable Typeface

  • LTR Very Bauble: Styles, Sets & Values

  • LTR Limited Grotesque Features & Stylistic Sets

  • LTR Federal has a couple, this is a nice example

Help me out!

You read everything I write in comfortable anonymity, and that is how this relationship will continue. However I would love some feedback: click on the topic you would like to hear more of.

Socials

While building this mailinglist (thank you for signing up!), and slowly saying goodbye to Insta (ugh), I offloaded all the images that I posted to it over the years. And I had forgotten a lot of them! This short movie shows most of them in randomised order. All handmade drawings or self-snapped photos. No AI slop. This video really needed a catchy tune, which one do you think most appropriate.

In the mean time:

A lot of our typefaces are available on Adobe Fonts. Including such classics as LTR Beowolf, and LTR NCND, the typeface that keeps causing trouble.

While packing up the studio, all the red and yellow signs posed together. A Coopery E provenance unknown, an Avant-Guarduesque A (old Allstate sign, US), stencilled Berlin-DDR bus replacement sign, enamel Gas line warning (Dutch) and a Dutch bike path sign with type by Gerard Unger. On top: a gutsy House 33 mousepad.

A bitmap image of a Lego minifig in a spacesuit. Subtitles below read "...because relevance is a drug". A line by Pharrell Williams, reflecting on the relationship between the creative person and the audience.
Pharrell Williams said it, Piece by Piece, 2024. Bill Atkinson dithered it. And it made me think. Did you see the movie?
